The news has been full of new medium-duty trucks coming to market and arriving at dealers, but the light-duty segment is quickly growing for the work truck segment.

The light-duty market includes both mid-size and full-size pickup trucks.U.S. light-truck sales in 2018 grew 7.7%, according to the Automotive News Data Center, to 11.98 million units — a level car sales have never reached. Additionally, the Diesel Technology Forum shared that sales of light-duty vehicles equipped with diesel engines crossed 500,000 in 2018, partly driven by a 12.5% gain among heavy-duty pickups.

For light-duty vehicles in Class 1 through Class 3, sales of diesel-equipped models reached more than 500,000 units in 2018, which represented more than 3% of the overall market of 17.33 million vehicles sold, according to DTF, which sourced Baum & Assoc. data. And, the popularity of the 4×4 has risen in comparison to the 4×2.

It’s a question we get all the time. What is a 3/4-ton truck? The confusion is understandable, as the terminology dates back many decades. The terms half-ton, 3/4-ton, and 1-ton are generally used to describe different classes of pickup trucks, based on how much payload the truck is able to carry.

  1. Naturally, as the years progressed, the amount of payload trucks could haul has increased significantly.
  2. What didn’t change, however, was the loose classification.
  3. Using Ford as an example, the F-150 would be considered a half-ton, the F-250 Super Duty would be a 3/4-ton, and the F-350 Super Duty would be a 1-ton.

In more technical terms, trucks now are broken into classes by the Federal Highway Administration. The FHWA uses a trucks Gross Vehicle Weight Rating to assign it a class. Trucks with a GVWR of up to 6,000 pounds would be considered Class 1 pickups. Class 1 pickups include most of the current midsize class.

  1. Class 2 is broken into two parts; Class 2a designates trucks with a GVWR from 6,001 to 8,500 pounds, and Class 2b designates trucks with a GVWR from 8,501 to 10,000 pounds.
  2. Traditional half-ton pickups fall into the 2a classification, while those designated as 3/4-ton trucks are in the 2b class.
  3. Class 3 trucks are those with a GVWR from 10,001 to 14,000 pounds, which encompasses the current 1-ton class of pickups.

So, to answer the question of what a 3/4-ton truck is, by the government’s definition it simply is any pickup with a GVWRthat falls between 8,501 and 10,000 pounds. This would include the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, GMC Sierra 2500HD, Ford F-250 Super Duty, Nissan Titan XD, and Ram 2500 pickups.

A few other vehicles that aren’t pickups fall into this category, as well, such as Nissan’s NV2500 and Ford’s E-250 vans, and in generations past SUVs such as Chevrolet’s K2500 Suburban and even Lincoln’s Navigator. Why the confusion then? Well, we’d have to go quite a way back in history to find a 3/4-ton truck that could haul just three quarters of a ton (1,500 pounds) of payload, as most current 3/4-ton pickups can haul between 3,000 and 4,000 pounds (which for those counting at home, is more like two tons).

Also, based on current Federal Highway Administration classification, some trucks currently considered to be in the 3/4-ton class would fall into the Class 2b category, while those with gross vehicle weight ratings over 10,000 pounds would fall into the Class 3 category alongside their 1-ton brethren.

  1. Then, for the final answer on what a 3/4-ton truck is, it’s simply a marketing term for trucks that fall in between the light-duty full-size trucks and the heaviest of the heavy-duty pickups.
  2. These 3/4-ton trucks most often share chassis, drivetrain, and even cabs with their 1-ton counterparts.
  3. However, they feature lighter-duty suspension and chassis bits for a better ride when ultra-heavy hauling isn’t needed.

Now the confusing part: The classifications grossly underrate the true payloads of these trucks. For instance, the half-ton class is actually capable of around three-quarters of a ton of payload. Three-quarter-ton trucks may carry more than a ton and a half, and one-ton trucks have been known to safely haul more than twice that.

The trucks’ published payload rating and/or gross vehicle weight rating are the only way to know how much weight a specific truck can carry. Higher classes and payloads are made possible by heavier frames and stronger suspensions, brakes, engines, or a combination thereof. This beefier construction helps a lot in towing a trailer as well, with tow ratings that easily outperform the lesser light-duty pickups.

The downside is that they get poorer fuel economy and are more trucklike in their performance as their capabilities increase.
