The all-new 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class has arrived in Australia after a short delay to take the fight to the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4. As first reported by Drive, the local C-Class range comprises two variants – C200 and C300 – both offering petrol power and AMG Line packages as standard, priced from $78,900 before on-road costs across Mercedes-Benz showrooms nationwide.

That starting price represents a $12,000 increase over the outgoing C200 ($66,900), with the new-generation C300 now $15,100 more expensive than before (at $90,400 before on-road costs) – but Mercedes-Benz Australia says there’s a longer list of features on offer than before (with $10,000 worth of extra features understood to feature in the C200), with new technologies and a larger body.

As reported, Mercedes-Benz Australia moved to an ‘agency’ price model for 2022, with all prices now non-negotiable and fixed across the company’s network of showrooms – though the exact drive-away price buyers pay will differ between states, given differences in registration and stamp duty costs.

• Powering the entry-level C200 is a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine developing 150kW and 300Nm, sent to the rear wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission.
• A 7.3-second 0-100km/h time is claimed, along with a fuel economy claim of 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres.
• Meanwhile, the C300 upgrades to a 190kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder – with a unique turbocharger design enabling 20kW of overboost – paired to the same nine-speed automatic gearbox for a 6.0-second 0-100km/h time, and a 7.3L/100km combined fuel economy claim.

Both models feature 48-volt mild-hybrid systems, incorporating an integrated starter-generator unit to provide a 15kW/200Nm boost under hard acceleration, or to shut off the engine when gliding to a halt. The new C-Class is larger than the car it replaces, with a 25mm-longer wheelbase (2865mm) clothed by a 4793mm-long and 1820mm-wide body in AMG Line guise.
