In the event of an accident the Mercedes-Benz emergency call system can help to significantly speed up the arrival of the rescue services at the accident scene. The data is relayed via the Communication Module (LTE) for Digital Services in the vehicle.
- The emergency call can be triggered automatically by the crash sensors or manually by the driver using the SOS button in the overhead control panel.
- It will then be sent to the Mercedes-Benz emergency call number or to a local emergency call centre.
- The system establishes a voice connection to the Mercedes-Benz emergency call centre or to the local emergency call centre and transmits the precise position as well as further information necessary for effective rescue and recovery.
At the same time, the fleet manager is notified and kept up-to-date on the individual measures. The Mercedes-Benz emergency call system is activated from the moment the vehicle is handed over. There are no separate terms and conditions of use to accept.

Is Mercedes live traffic free?
Dear NH, – Not if you’re to stick with the standard Mercedes “ecosystem”, as the tech types like to call it – in other words, the set of apps and interfaces that Mercedes builds into its cars. Unfortunately, what you’re seeing here is the start of a disconcerting trend that’s going to become a large part of car buyers’ lives in the future.
- Pretty soon, many (if not most) manufacturers will offer some or all of their optional extras as subscriptions.
- The idea is that they build the car with all the hardware in place, but it only gets activated if you sign up in an online shop and agree to pay a fee each month for the use of specific options in the car you’ve bought.
This has its advantages for used-car buyers – namely, that you can turn on options that the person who specified it originally may not have wanted. But to my mind this advantage is outweighed by the manifold downsides for consumers, whether we’re talking about the extra weight, wastage and CO2 emissions that come from fitting new cars with a bunch of hardware that may never get used, or the fact that you end up having to pay many times over for something you’d originally have had for a set fee.
- Or, indeed, the fact that there’s nothing to stop a manufacturer arbitrarily putting up the price or bundling in several other options you didn’t really want further down the line, as has happened here.
- I’m sorry to say you’re getting an early preview of the future of new car ownership and, in this regard at least, it’s a bit grim, in my view.
What can you do to get around it? In this instance, there are a few options. You could simply buy an aftermarket satnav with live traffic updates. There are a few around, but the Garmin DriveSmart 65 is reckoned by Auto Express to be the best and it’s easy to operate thanks to a large screen.
Alternatively, your E-Class is fitted with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. That means if you’re a smartphone user with a phone tariff that allows for the use of data, you can plug in your phone and use many of its functions via your car’s touchscreen. In this manner you can use a mapping or satnav app, such as Google Maps or Waze, to replace your car’s native satellite navigation while still using its central screen.
These apps use live traffic information to route you around blockages in real-time and, for now at least, they’re both free to download and use. If you’re not that tech-savvy, your Mercedes dealer should be able to show you how to get the system working.

Why does my car tell me to take a coffee break?
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO – Watch, listen and feel for cues from your drowsiness alert system that you may have become drowsy behind-the-wheel.
Drowsiness alert systems display a coffee cup and message on your dashboard to take a driving break if it suspects that you’re drowsy. Some systems with audio alerts may verbally tell you that you may be drowsy and should take a break as soon as it’s safe to do so. Your seat may vibrate in some cars with drowsiness alerts.
