History – Architect Robert O. Derrick designed the museum with a 523,000 square feet (48,600 m 2 ) exhibit hall that extends 400 feet (120 m) behind the main façade. The façade spans 800 feet (240 m) and incorporates facsimiles of three structures from Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia – Old City Hall, Independence Hall and Congress Hall,
- The Edison Institute was dedicated by President Herbert Hoover to Ford’s longtime friend Thomas Edison on October 21, 1929 – the 50th anniversary of the first successful incandescent light bulb,

The dedication was broadcast on radio with listeners encouraged to turn off their electric lights until the switch was flipped at the Museum. It was originally composed of the Henry Ford Museum, Greenfield Village, and the Greenfield Village Schools (an experimental learning facility). Initially, Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum were owned by the Ford Motor Company, which is currently a sponsor of the school and cooperates with the Henry Ford to provide the Ford Rouge Factory Tour.
The Henry Ford is sited between the Ford Dearborn Development Center and several Ford engineering buildings with which it shares the same style gates and brick fences. The collections of The Henry Ford, defined as objects, photographs, books, periodicals, manuscripts, moving images, and recordings, are the primary tools and resources for providing authentic, effective historical experiences.
Submit all potential donations or purchases in writing, directed to the Benson Ford Research Center (see contact information below). Describe the object, including any model numbers, manufacturers’ names, and the measurements Write a short statement about the owner’s intention to donate or sell the object. Include a photograph or photocopy of the object with your letter.
Once the Benson Ford Research Center receives your written proposal, staff assigns a tracking number and forwards the letter to the curator in charge of the appropriate object area. The curator researches the history of the object and determines if the object meets the criteria established by the museum for acceptance into the collections.
The criteria include but are not limited to whether the artifact advances the museum’s mission statement. When an object meets the criteria, the curator then recommends a proposed object to the Collections Committee, which is responsible for shaping and developing the museum’s collections. Guests to Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation and the Giant Screen Experience are permitted to smoke outside the west side of the Museum under the Giant Screen Experience banners and at the east (Michigan Café) end of the Museum on the sidewalk next to the yellow service gate on Lovett Road.

The collections of The Henry Ford, defined as objects, photographs, books, periodicals, manuscripts, moving images, and recordings, are the primary tools and resources for providing authentic, effective historical experiences.
Submit all potential donations or purchases in writing, directed to the Benson Ford Research Center (see contact information below). Describe the object, including any model numbers, manufacturers’ names, and the measurements Write a short statement about the owner’s intention to donate or sell the object. Include a photograph or photocopy of the object with your letter.
Once the Benson Ford Research Center receives your written proposal, staff assigns a tracking number and forwards the letter to the curator in charge of the appropriate object area. The curator researches the history of the object and determines if the object meets the criteria established by the museum for acceptance into the collections.
- The criteria include but are not limited to whether the artifact advances the museum’s mission statement.
- When an object meets the criteria, the curator then recommends a proposed object to the Collections Committee, which is responsible for shaping and developing the museum’s collections.
- The committee then approves or rejects the proposed object.

Goodbye winter, hello spring! As spring officially begins today, Michiganders breathe a collective sigh of relief. For those who have experienced it, the winter of 2014 has been memorable; this is especially true for the Firestone and William Ford Barn staff who braved polar vortexes and many feet of snow to ensure our animals had the shelter, food, water, vet care, and stimulation they needed.
- Throughout the winter months, we still had vet appointments, our farrier still changed horseshoes, we still taught horses new skills (when conditions were safe for humans and horses alike), and we still moved tons of hay and grain.
- Carrying several 50-pound hay bales is quite a task; doing the same through drifting snow and arctic winds is heroic! The folks who do this day-in and day-out do not see themselves as heroes, however.
They have a deep dedication to the animals that make Greenfield Village home. This is inspiration enough to do whatever is required—and more! As the days get longer, the sun stronger, and birdsong louder, we think about spring and our spirits are lifted.
On the farm, spring means new life: blossoms, pasture grasses, oats, wheat and lambs! As we prepare for our new arrivals (which should begin around the same time Greenfield Village opens for our guests), staff are busy preparing lambing jugs—small, private pens wherein lambs and mothers can bond, shearing pregnant ewes so that they are more comfortable and hygienic for birthing, and undergoing yearly special training that prepares everyone for the challenges and excitement that comes with lambing.
Despite the threat of more snow and cold temperatures, we know both spring and lambs are on the way and we are eager to share both with our guests when Greenfield Village opens on April 15th!
