The Ford Fusion is a mid-size car that was manufactured and marketed by the Ford Motor Company, From the 2006 through 2020 model years, two generations of the Fusion have been produced in gasoline, gas/electric hybrid, and gas/plug-in electric hybrid variants.
- The Fusion was manufactured at Ford’s Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly plant in Sonora, Mexico, alongside its rebadged variant the Lincoln MKZ, and formerly the Mercury Milan, both of which share its CD3 platform.
- Production on the first Fusions began on August 1, 2005.
- The Fusion replaced the Mondeo for the Latin American markets—except in Argentina (where the current European Mondeo is available) and in the United States and Canada (where it superseded the then mid-size Taurus and the compact Contour ).
The Fusion is positioned between the compact Ford Focus and the full-size Ford Taurus, In the Middle East, this model is sold alongside the Mondeo, Versions sold there are available only with the 2.5-liter engine. Unlike in the United States, Canada, and Latin America, no V6 engine is available in that region.
- The same is true in South Korea, where only the 2.5-liter engines (including those for the hybrid model) are available as of the 2012 model year.
- The second generation line-up includes a gasoline engine option, an EcoBoost engine option, a next-generation hybrid model, and a plug-in hybrid version, the Ford Fusion Energi, making the Ford Fusion the first production sedan to offer these four options.
Sales of the gasoline-powered and hybrid versions began in the U.S. in October 2012 under the 2013 model. Sales in Europe and Asia as Ford Mondeo began in 2015, along with South Africa, where the Fusion name was used. Deliveries of the Fusion Energi began in the U.S.

Why did Ford discontinue the Fusion?
Ford isn’t afraid to discontinue beloved models to focus on their most popular vehicles. Even after years of success, the Ford Taurus was put to rest in 2019. Some may also fondly remember the Ford Festiva, which was plain in appearance but also highly efficient and affordable.
- The Ford Fusion is another seemingly popular sedan that was taken from us in the blink of an eye.
- What made the Ford Fusion so special, and where can you buy one today? The history of the Ford Fusion According to Car Buyer Labs, the Fusion was projected to be the automaker’s first hybrid vehicle.
- It was also the first one to feature Ford’s new three-bar grille design that would mark the automaker’s latest design era.
The Ford Fusion was released in 2005, though the hybrid model wouldn’t appear until 2009. Drivers could choose between a 160-horsepower four-cylinder or a 221-horsepower V-6 engine. Though not a hybrid, it was still one of the most efficient vehicles of its class.
- Its first three years yielded plenty of great improvements, including AWD, a tire-pressure monitoring system, and a DVD navigation feature.
- The 2009 Ford Fusion Hybrid featured a 156-horsepower four-cylinder engine and earned an impressive 39 mpg combined city/highway.
- By comparison, the 2006 Ford Fusion only got up to 24 mpg combined.
The 2009 Fusion Sport was far less efficient, but it came with an exciting 263-horsepower V-6. More features and trim levels were released for the second generation in 2012, including the Ford Fusion Energi. Upon its release, it came with a plug-in battery that supplied 20 miles of electric range.
By the end of its lifespan in 2020, it made 42 mpg combined in hybrid mode. Its battery was also upgraded to 26 miles. The Fusion also received some of Ford’s cutting-edge safety technology, like adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitors. Even more advanced features were added to the standard Co-Pilot360 suite, including pre-collision braking and rear cross-traffic alert.
Why was the Ford Fusion discontinued? Ford Authority reported that the Ford Fusion’s production officially ended at the end of July 2020. Ford made the decision to focus its budget towards its more popular SUVs, like the Explorer and rugged new Bronco.
As a result, we also said goodbye to both the Fiesta and the Focus sedans. Despite its reputation, the Ford Fusion’s sales had been suffering for years. It only sold 110,665 units last year, its worst performance to date without counting its debut year. Thanks to Motor Authority, we know that the Fusion will be replaced with a crossover hatchback.
However, we don’t know if it will keep the Fusion badge or if it will even make it stateside. Its dismal sales during its final years aren’t exactly promising. How much does a used model cost? If you missed out on the Ford Fusion back in its heyday, you can still get a great deal on a used model.
According to Edmunds, a black Ford Fusion with less than 70,000 miles on the odometer costs as low as $16,000. Models more than five years old are even cheaper. Even if your budget only permits a car with 90,000 miles, rest assured that the Ford Fusion is historically dependable. Get affordable insurance for your used car The great thing about buying an older, reliable vehicle like the Ford Fusion is that it’s almost guaranteed to have lower insurance rates.

Which is bigger Fusion or Taurus?
Ford Motor Company hits two home runs in a row with its 2018 Ford Fusion and Ford Taurus models, making small and mid-size sedans that are safe, reliable, and comfortable. Like any siblings, however, the Fusion and Taurus have differences. Evaluating the capabilities of each vehicle will help Bloomington auto consumers learn which vehicle is right for their individual needs. If you’re looking for the vehicle with the most oomph, the Taurus is your choice. The base Taurus model has a 288 horsepower engine, which far out-muscles the base Fusion’s 175 horsepower engine, even when accounting for the Fusion’s smaller size. Compare for Yourself The Fusion also offers two turbocharged four-cylinder engines that can boost horsepower to 181 or 245 horsepower.
- The Fusion Sport has a 2.7-liter V6 that cranks out 325 horsepower.
- Taurus still dominates, however, as the top Taurus SHO trim offers a twin-turbo EcoBoost engine that generates 365 horsepower.
- Of the two vehicles, the Taurus offers the best ride quality.
- There’s very little road noise in the Taurus’s cabin, and the vehicle handles the bumps and jolts of the road exceptionally well.
The Fusion does have an advantage over the Taurus when it comes to handling, however, as the smaller vehicle is more nimble and corners better. The Fusion also offers superior fuel economy than the Taurus. The Fusion gets 21 mpg in urban driving and 32 mpg on the highway. While both the Fusion and the Taurus have nice interiors, the Fusion’s interior is a little more modern and makes use of more upscale materials. Also, while the Taurus is the larger vehicle, the Fusion manages its available space better in the cabin, resulting in a more spacious and comfortable feeling interior than the Taurus provides.
One advantage the Taurus’s larger size gives it over the Fusion is cargo space. The 2018 Taurus has a 20.1-cubic-foot trunk, as compared to the Fusion’s 16-cubic-foot trunk. Back seats on both vehicles fold down for extra cargo capacity. To Sum Up If you’re looking for something with a little extra punch and a little more cargo space, the Taurus is right for you.
If you’re in the market for a fuel-efficient commuter that’s comfy, the Fusion is your ride. Whether the Taurus or the Fusion is the right Ford for you, the best dealership for new and used cars in Bloomington i s Community Cars. Full-size Ford is a term adopted for a long-running line of Ford vehicles with a shared model lineage in North America. Originating in 1908 with the Ford Model T, the line ended in 2019 with the Ford Taurus, as Ford withdrew from the full-sized sedan segment in North America.
- Across 111 years, 15 generations, and over 60 million examples of the model line were produced across over 50 model nameplates.
- By contrast, the longest-running single nameplate worldwide is the Chevrolet Suburban, in use since the 1935 model year.
- While best known for its production as a four-door sedan, the model lineage supported a wide range of body configurations, including coupes, hard tops, convertibles, station wagons, and retractable hardtops.
Prior to the 1948 model year, the Ford chassis was also the basis of Ford pickup trucks (which were replaced by the Ford F-Series ). To different extents, Mercury and Lincoln shared either a body and/or chassis with full-sized Fords from the 1940s to the 2010s.
Alongside with its status as the physically largest sedan offered by Ford in North America, nearly the entire line shared a common design lineage, including a rear-wheel drive layout and body-on-frame construction (excepting the final Ford Taurus), a V8 engine was offered for nearly all generations.
At the time of its 2012 model-year discontinuation, the Ford Crown Victoria was the final mass-produced sedan offered with a separate frame.
