Ford has issued two separate recalls today, including one for the 2014 to 2016 Taurus and Explorer as well as the 2014 Edge, and another for the 2020 Explorer and Lincoln Aviator. The first recall, for a total of 15,587 U.S. vehicles, is to replace a link shaft bracket that could fracture and lead to a loss of power while driving or cause the parking function to fail leading to the vehicle rolling while in park.
The second recall of the 2020 models, for a total of 10,905 U.S. vehicles, is for a driveshaft that could fracture along a welding seam, causing either unintentional vehicle movement or a loss of power when driving. The defective driveshaft could also separate from the driveline, potentially then hitting the fuel tank and leading to a risk of fire, Ford said.
Of the recalled 2020 Explorers and Aviators, Ford said that it has identified 18 vehicles that have the defective driveshaft. In a press release, Ford also said that it is unaware of any accidents that have resulted from either of the recalled parts. Dealers will replace the link shaft brackets on the recalled vehicles and will inspect the drivetrain of those affected vehicles and replace them as needed.

Ford is recalling about a quarter of a million Explorer SUVs from model years 2020 through 2022 because they can roll away while parked. The recall applies to Explorers, Explorer Hybrids, and Police versions of the SUV. In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ford explains, “Affected vehicles were built with a 3-point mounted axle design.
On some units the rear axle horizontal mounting bolt may fracture.” It tends to happen after several “peak torque events,” such as when a driver launches the vehicle by depressing the gas fully from a stop. When the bolt fractures, the rear axle housing can move out of position. Drivers might hear “loud, grinding, binding, or clunking noises,” Ford says.
Once that happens, the transmission can no longer hold the vehicle in park. Most Explorers come equipped with an electronic parking brake. Setting it will hold the vehicle in park even if the fracture has occurred. But Police editions lack the electronic parking brake.
Ford dealers will correct the defect by installing a new bushing and axle cover on Police models, and on other models by updating software so that the electronic parking brake engages automatically when the vehicle is in park. Recall repairs are always free. But millions of us miss recall notices every year and unknowingly drive recalled vehicles.
