Do I need a data plan for Audi connect?
An external data source is required to enable the Audi Connect Online Infotainment Services (“Infotainment Services”). One of two can be used: • a separate SIM card with data option (which can be inserted into the vehicle SIM card reader). If 4G usage is required the SIM card will also need a 4G option.
When a separate SIM card is used, hands-free phone calls are possible by connecting a different mobile telephone via Bluetooth hands-free profile. For mobile phone and software compatibility please visit www.audi.co.uk/phonecompatibility or your local Audi Centre; or • on capable mobile phones the phone’s data connection can be shared with the vehicle via personal hotspot/tethering, although using this method may result in high consumption of your mobile phone battery.
Infotainment Services will only be available within the coverage of your mobile phone network and there may be additional costs for the use of Connect Services (charges and billing correspond to your personal mobile phone contract or SIM card contract).
Due to high data volumes, a mobile phone contract including an unlimited or high usage data plan is strongly recommended. The Infotainment Services enable access to certain search, social media and other online services provided by third parties. Features vary by model. Online without borders The Audi connect SIM is now being equipped in all new models that use Audi’s second-generation modular infotainment platform, including the A4 and Q7. A factory-installed SIM card allows drivers to immediately use a wide range of Audi connect online services, with the accompanying data flat rate, for up to three years – even outside Ireland.
The first result of a collaboration between Audi and Dublin-based tech company Cubic Telecom, a leading supplier of seamless worldwide connectivity solutions, the Audi connect SIM is a permanently installed SIM card, known as an ‘embedded SIM’ or ‘eSIM’, which customers in Europe will receive in combination with the optional Audi connect equipment package.
This makes the car into a mobile communications centre. Audi connect services are brought on board through an LTE/UMTS module with a download speed of 100Mbps providing a wide range of services including navigation with Google Earth and Google Street View, travel, traffic and parking information.
Drivers can also access their Twitter and email accounts and their smartphone’s calendar. The new SIM card contains an unlimited data volume for these services. In most European countries the Audi connect SIM automatically accesses the provider for each specific country, which eliminates high, country-specific roaming charges and inconvenient roaming confirmations.
Customers have the option of purchasing additional data packages for the Wi-Fi hotspot, independent of the integrated Audi connect services. A component of the optional navigation systems, this feature allows all passengers to use the internet at attractive rates with up to eight mobile devices.
When selecting a European data package, the data transfer also automatically works accordingly when crossing an international border at fixed prices. Through your myAudi account you can reach the Cubic Telecom online shop and, after a one off registration, you can obtain the Wi-Fi hotspot data package.
Once the required access is granted, it’s easy to purchase data packages quickly and conveniently through the car’s MMI system. You can also use your own SIM card and establish Wi-Fi internet access through your own cellular provider. In this case, the data volume used by Audi connect services will also be charged to the customer’s SIM card and the Audi connect SIM temporarily deactivated.
Access to the use of Audi connect services is granted when the car is purchased with the new SIM card installed – and in addition MMI Navigation plus is free for three years. After this, it can be extended by an Audi service partner for a fee. The Audi connect SIM is used in all new models that include the second-generation modular infotainment platform.

How does Audi MMI Connect app work?
Audi connect safety & service – The services of Audi connect safety & service are organized into two parts. The first cluster comprises emergency call, online roadside assistance and Audi service request. In the event of a serious accident, such as one that has activated the airbag, the car independently initiates an emergency call.
It establishes a voice and data connection with the Emergency Call Center and supplies important data such as GPS coordinates, direction of travel and number of occupants. A specially trained service employee will ask for additional details regarding the severity of the accident so that optimal assistance measures can be initiated without delay.
If the accident victims are not responsive, an ambulance will be dispatched to the scene of the accident. The driver or front passenger can also activate the emergency call manually using a switch in the roof module. Because the emergency call module has its own power source, it can establish a voice connection even if the car’s electrical system has failed.
- The driver or front passenger can also trigger online roadside assistance manually by pushing a button in the roof module.
- This connects them to the Audi Service Center, and the location and relevant car status data are transmitted.
- The vehicle’s Audi service request function sends service-relevant data to the workshop specified by the customer in the myAudi portal two weeks prior to scheduled maintenance.
The service partner can then contact the customer to schedule an appointment. The second part of the packages comprises the remote services, which can be controlled via an app. Examples are locking and unlocking the car, checking where the car is parked and calling up the vehicle status.
The status report includes information about the opened/closed state of windows and unlocked/locked state of doors, remaining range, fuel level and oil level, which the customer can have displayed on his smartphone. The app can also be used to conveniently program the optional auxiliary heating function.
With Audi e-tron models, owners can call up the charge status and electric range in the myAudi app. They can also activate the charging process and climate control remotely – including at specific times with user-configured timers. Charge and trip statistics round out the offer.
Audi has digitalized the conventional vehicle key and transferred it to the user’s smartphone in the form of the Audi connect key. It is used to unlock and lock the car, and authorizes engine start-up. Communication between the vehicle and the smartphone is by near field communication (NFC). This technology refers to a standard in which data is transmitted over short distances by radio signal.
To unlock the car, the driver holds the smartphone near the handle of the driver’s door which contains an NFC antenna. To start the engine, the phone is placed in the Audi phone box, which is also equipped with an NFC antenna. The highly sensitive data of the digital key in the smartphone must be protected against read-out, duplication and manipulation.
To do this, the Audi connect key is saved in a secure memory and execution environment within the smartphone, either on the SIM card or directly in the device. This secure element is connected directly to the NFC antenna via the single wire protocol (SWP) – which is another security advantage, because the smartphone’s operating system is not involved in the communication between the car and the smartphone.
In the future, customers will be able to share up to 15 keys over-the-air, e.g. with family members, friends or colleagues. The car recognizes the key owner when it is unlocked, and it loads a wide variety of settings from the user’s individual profile – ranging from seat position to air conditioning and navigation settings.
This solution makes the one-to-one relationship between a vehicle key and a vehicle obsolete, because one smartphone can store keys for multiple vehicles. For situations in which the driver needs to share the Audi connect key for a short period of time, but the driver does not want to hand over the smartphone, an Audi connect key card in credit card format is available in the car.
The driver can activate it and give it to valet parking personnel, for instance, or passed on in the case of a breakdown. The Audi connect key is always ready for use, even if the smartphone’s battery is not charged (depends on specific model), because the NFC chip draws the energy it needs from an electromagnetic field produced by its counterpart.

| How can I use the Wi-Fi hotspot? Enter by pressing TEL >> Settings >> Connections >> Network Connection (WLAN) >> WLAN Settings The following WLAN settings are available: By default, the name of the access point (SSID) is composed of “Audi” and the last five digits of the VIN. This name can be changed (select the line). Letters, numbers, and the special characters # * + are allowed as constituents of the name. The WLAN connection encryption type can be changed (some – mainly older devices / network cards – support WEP encryption only). The following encryption types are available: WEP, WPA, WPA2. We recommend the use of WPA2 encryption for increased security. Changing the encryption type will automatically change the WLAN password to a random password. The WLAN password for the WEP encryption type must be exactly 13 characters. For WPA and WPA2, the password must at least have at least eight and a maximum of 63 characters. The password may contain only letters, digits, and the special characters # * +. The WLAN connection is established in the same way as by a WLAN router at home. In order to establish a WLAN connection on the end device (e.g. notebook, smartphone, iPod touch, etc.), it must be searched for available WLAN networks. For this purpose, Wi-Fi hotspot visibility must be activated (“Visible to Others”). If the “Visible to Others” option is set to “Off”, a WLAN connection with the vehicle can only be established if the name of the access point (SSID) and the password are known. Important: After making changes in the settings, you must confirm them by selecting the “Apply Settings” menu item. Only then the changes will be effective. Otherwise, they will be discarded. The new configuration of the WLAN settings must also be made on the end device! |
| Why can the Wi-Fi hotspot not be used although the data connection is active? (Depending on the mobile communication service provider), the use of Internet data for the Wi-Fi hotspot may be interrupted to ensure reachability in the “Automatic” telephone mode and the “Optimised Telephony” mode. This ensures reachability for incoming calls. When the WLAN hotspot is used, it must be switched to the “Optimised Data Services” setting. | How does the transfer of personal contacts work from the myAudi portal to the MMI? Stored contacts (or contacts sent by Google Maps™) can be edited in the myAudi portal under “myAudi Destinations Management”. They can be directly imported into the address book of your vehicle after storing them in your myAudi account. For this purpose, enter the “Address Book” and press the “Memory” function key. Then select “Import”. Next, select “myAudi Account” and enter the PIN generated in the Audi portal when prompted. Then the contacts will be imported and become available in the address book. The contacts stored in your myAudi account can also be used directly as navigation destinations (online destinations). There are two possibilities to send contacts of the myAudi portal as navigation destinations to the MMI: They can be loaded through Online Destinations and by importing them from the Address Book. |
| Which PIN must be used for Audi connect? In order to use the personal destinations of the myAudi account ( www.audi.de/myAudi ), the vehicle must be connected once to the myAudi account. After the VIN is entered into the myAudi portal, an eight-digit PIN is generated. When you use the “Call Destinations from myAudi Account” or “Address Book Import from myAudi Account” function, and, in the A3, additionally through “Login” in the Audi connect main menu, this PIN must be entered once in the vehicle. To protect the customer’s personal data, the PIN is stored only for the connected mobile phone or the inserted SIM card. When the address book is reset to the factory settings, the PIN is deleted and must be entered again. |
| How many contacts can be permanently imported into the vehicle address book? A maximum of 100 contacts, including the maximum number of 50 online destinations from the myAudi account can be permanently imported into the vehicle address book in the MMI. For example, if already 80 contact memory locations of the vehicle address book are used, 20 additional memory locations are available for contacts from the myAudi account. |
How long do you get Audi connect for free?
Audi Connect Online Infotainment Services (“Infotainment Services”) are provided via a SIM card embedded in the vehicle. The Infotainment Services enable access to certain search, social media and other online services provided by third parties. Features vary by model.

Infotainment Services are available only within the range of the selected mobile phone network operated by Audi AG’s chosen mobile phone provider (which may change from time to time) and where there is mobile reception, including an active data connection.
There is no charge for data connection during any 3-month free trial or any optional or standard 36 month subscription period. Data is unlimited. There are no additional charges for data roaming within the EU (although availability of these services is limited to certain countries). You will not however, be able to use the embedded SIM to provide Wi-Fi hotspot services or to tether any other device to the embedded SIM.
Should you wish to create a Wi-Fi hotspot we recommend you purchase Wi-Fi data packs via myAudi (Link: https://login.audi.com). Any Wi-Fi data packs purchased via myAudi will remain with the vehicle upon sale of the vehicle and no refunds will be provided.
If you insert an external SIM card into the card slot (e.g. so as to enable Wi-Fi hotspot services), then all Infotainment Services data connections will be made via this SIM card (and not the Audi embedded SIM card) and all related data costs incurred may be charged to the customer by the provider of the plan associated with the external SIM card.
You may not use the Connect Services and the embedded SIM for any purpose other than the provision or receipt of services in accordance with these terms. Some services require additional activation steps. In order to enjoy such services customers must register, accept the terms and conditions and follow the activation steps instructed on myAudi (please visit https://login.audi.com).
Some services also require the download of the myAudi app on a compatible phone or tablet (always check latest phone and software compatibility). For vehicles which have hazard alert and traffic sign information features, the vehicle sensors will be transmitting information to Audi AG. This information includes, but is not limited to, vehicle location, speed signs, areas where a risk of skidding, breakdown, accident and/or reduced visibility has been identified.
The data is transmitted to Audi AG and shared with other Audi vehicles with hazard alert and traffic sign information features. The data is transmitted anonymously and does not identify an individual vehicle. Such data is only held for the purpose of warning drivers of potential road hazards and change of speed signs.
