What isn’t covered under warranty?
Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty – A is the most comprehensive coverage you can get for your vehicle. It’s also called an exclusionary warranty because it lists a short number of components that are not included in the coverage. This type of warranty is usually offered for both factory and extended warranties.
All major vehicle systems |
Electrical components (alternator, power windows, door locks, sunroofs, etc.) |
Safety features (airbags, seat belts, etc.) |
---|---|---|
Air conditioning and heating (compressor, condenser, evaporator, etc.) |
Steering (rack and pinion, power steering pump, power steering hoses, etc.) |

A powertrain warranty covers your vehicle’s powertrain, which includes:
Engine Transmission Axles Driveshafts Seals Gaskets Transfer case And more
The coverage period of a powertrain warranty is usually longer than a bumper-to-bumper warranty—five years or 60,000 miles. Some last as long as 10 years or 100,000 miles. The cost to repair parts of your powertrain doesn’t come cheap. According to Car Care Council, replacing the engine alone can cost several thousand dollars. This warranty is meant to cover the cost of repairing corrosion on your vehicle, such as rust. Corrosion can cause damage to the car’s exterior from environmental factors such as salty air or moisture. Corrosion coverage is typically only found from factory standard or extended warranties, not third-party warranties. In general, these :
: Routine oil changes, tire rotations, etc. Wear and tear items: Brakes, brake pads, clutches, windshield wiper replacements, headlight bulbs, etc. Exterior or body panel damage: Dings and scratches in the paint Interior damage: Holes in the seats, broken plastic, etc. Damage caused by improper car care: Skipping regular maintenance, reckless driving, etc. Damage from an accident: Dents in the exterior, broken glass, etc. Damage from environmental factors: Tree sap, salt, sand, hail, wind, vandalism, etc. Alterations or modifications: Installing non-factory parts, tampering with the odometer, etc.
It’s important to read your specific warranty and understand the fine print for yourself. Your car’s warranty may have a different plan or level of coverage. Read the warranties of these automakers to know what to expect from your car warranty coverage:

How do I know whats covered under my warranty?
How Do You Check Whether a Car Is Still Under Warranty? – To determine whether your car is still under warranty, you’ll need to know its mileage and date of purchase. Your car’s owner’s manual will have details on the warranty coverage from when the car was initially sold.
- To find the mileage, check the odometer.
- If the car’s mileage exceeds the warranty limit, the car is no longer covered.
- If it does not go over the limit, you’ll still need to check the date of purchase.
- If you don’t know the original purchase date, write down the VIN (vehicle identification number) and call any dealership selling that car brand.
They will be able to look up the purchase date for you. If you are not your car’s first owner, you’ll also need to ask whether the warranty was transferred to you when you bought the car. The answer is almost always yes. But, for some manufacturers and some model years, warranty terms can change when a car gets sold as a used vehicle,
