How many cars does Ford make a day?
Ford Focus is company’s 350th millionth vehicle and world’s best-seller so far this year is celebrating its 350 millionth vehicle. That is an impressive number, spanning back 109 years. The lucky 350 millionth vehicle happens to be a 2013, which, appropriately enough, is the world’s for the first six months of this year.
The Focus in question has been built at Rayong, Thailand plant, the automaker’s newest production facility. The Blue Oval invested $450 million into opening the complex in May to produce the Focus, a globally sold vehicle. In acknowledging its milestone, Ford has released some other fun numbers to sift through.
With all of its global production facilities, those 350 million vehicles produced average out to 8,797 units a day – 367 vehicles every hour, or one every 10 seconds. See, right there? Ford probably built a new car in the time it took you to read that last sentence or two.

It only produced around 2,500 electric roadsters. In 2012, its first purely electric model went on sale: Tesla Model S.
The electric sedan has been on sale ever since. Then, Tesla’s luxury SUV, Model X was launched in 2015. When Tesla first started selling the mid-range electric sedan Model 3 in 2017, it needed a tremendous amount of effort to increase its production rate. After all, the Model 3 was the first vehicle that Tesla built at a rate similar to mainstream vehicles.
Soon after solving its production problems, Tesla ramped up its annual sales to almost 250K in 2018. This figure was doubled in 2020, thanks to the more popular SUV version of the Model 3. It is estimated that Tesla will reach 1M in vehicle sales in 2022.

How many Fords are waiting for chips?
Ford’s in a bit of a pickle right now. If you’re not aware of how chip shortages caused havoc last year, wait until you see what the situation is this year. The Drive reports that around 40,000 unfinished Ford Super Duty trucks are just lying there, waiting for parts.
- The truck pile is so large that it’s visible from space! We know how inflation is eating into our savings and how the pandemic has affected businesses in general.
- However, 2021 had another surprise waiting for automakers.
- On top of facing low volumes and poor sales, manufacturers had to put up with semiconductor shortages,
Just as we thought things were getting better, this happens. It’s not just Ford that’s going through supply chain issues in 2022. Honda, Toyota, and many mainstream automakers are struggling to meet demand, citing chip shortages as one of the primary reasons.
- The situation is so dire that many OEMs have started cutting down on vehicle features (like heated seats, auto-folding mirrors.etc.) that rely on low-supply chips.
- Contrary to what many think, this is done not as a cost-cutting measure but to keep inventory moving.
- The last thing carmakers want is a pile of unfinished cars awaiting parts.
Sadly, this feature-omission exercise is not particularly helping things, as you can tell with Ford and its near-40,000 units of unfinished trucks.

Ford’s former UK subsidiaries Jaguar and Land Rover, acquired in 1989 and 2000 respectively, were sold to the Indian automaker Tata Motors in March 2008. Ford owned the Swedish automaker Volvo from 1999 to 2010. Ford is the second-largest U.S.-based automaker (behind General Motors ) and the fifth-largest in the world (behind Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai and General Motors) based on 2015 vehicle production. At the end of 2010, Ford was the fifth-largest automaker in Europe.
- The company went public in 1956 but the Ford family, through special Class B shares, still retain 40 percent of the voting rights.
- During the financial crisis of 2007–08 the company struggled financially but did not have to be rescued by the federal government, unlike the other two major US automakers.
Ford Motors has since returned to profitability, and was the eleventh-ranked overall American-based company in the 2018 Fortune 500 list, based on global revenues in 2017 of $156.7 billion. In 2008, Ford produced 5.532 million automobiles and employed about 213,000 employees at around 90 plants and facilities worldwide.

Best selling automobiles are passenger cars and light trucks which, since the introduction of the Benz Patent Motorwagen in 1886, can claim to being the highest selling vehicles in the automobile markets. While references to verify the manufacturers’ claims have been included, there is always the possibility of inaccuracy or hyperbole,
A single vehicle can be sold concurrently under several nameplates in different markets, as with for example the Nissan Sunny ; in such circumstances manufacturers often provide only cumulative units sold figures for all models. As a result, there is no definitive standard for measuring units sold; Chrysler minivans has sold over 16 million worldwide.
Volkswagen has claimed its Beetle is the best-selling car in history, as it did not substantially change throughout its production run. By contrast, Toyota has applied the Corolla nameplate to 12 generations since 1966, which have sold over 50 million through 2021.

Is Ford or GM bigger?
The Competitive Positions of General Motors and Ford – Both General Motors and Ford have spent a relatively high amount of revenue on Research & Development, In 2021, the R&D expenditure of General Motors was $7.9 billion while Ford’s R&D spending was $7.6 billion,
- This implies an R&D Expense to Revenue Ratio (which measures the percentage of sales that is allocated to R&D expenditures) of 6.95% for General Motors and 6.02% for Ford.
- This relatively high R&D spending as well as having strong brand images, helps the companies to build an economic moat over their competitors.
General Motors achieved a market share of 13.9% in North America in 2021 while competitor Ford obtained a market share of 12% (in the same region and year). These numbers demonstrate the strong competitive position that the companies have in North America, showing a combined market share of over 25% in the region.
- Both companies have ambitious goals concerning the production of electric vehicles: General Motors has committed to making investments of more than $35.0 billion between 2020 and 2025 in both electric vehicles (EVs) and autonomous vehicles (AVs).
- The company plans to launch more than 30 EVs globally by 2025.
Its goal is to produce more than one million EVs in North America per year by 2026. Ford announced in March of 2022 that it intends to produce more than two million EVs per year by 2026. When it comes to its autonomous vehicles, General Motors appears to be ahead of Ford: in June 2022, its self-driving car subsidiary Cruise started to operate a self-driving taxi service in San Francisco.
The company owns 80% of the San Francisco-based Cruise. The goal of Cruise is $1 billion in revenue by 2025. This Monday, Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt said that it will bring a driverless taxi fleet to the states of Texas and Arizona in the next three months. The fact that Cruise won the first California permit to carry paying riders in driverless cars shows that the General Motors subsidiary is on track.
On the other hand, Argo AI, which is a self-driving company backed by Ford and Volkswagen, closed its Washington, DC operation as part of a broader round of layoffs which impacted about 150 employees, By 2030, General Motors plans to expand its margins to 12%-14%.
