What Gen is the 1989 Ford Ranger?

In the Americas, the Ford Ranger is a line of pickup trucks produced by Ford and introduced in 1982 for the 1983 model year. The Ford Ranger replaced the Mazda-sourced Ford Courier and became the best-selling compact truck in the United States from 1987 to 2004.

After the 2012 model year, Ford retired the Ranger line in North America to focus on its full-size F-Series trucks. Ford reintroduced the Ranger in 2019 for a fourth generation. The first-generation Ranger was introduced in 1982 for the 1983 model year and underwent a major mid-cycle revision in 1989.

The 1989 revision improved the Ranger’s exterior aerodynamics and interior ergonomics. First-generation Ford Ranger trucks were sold with a range of inline-four, V6, and diesel engines. The twin-spark-plug version of the Pinto engine was introduced in 1989 and remained in use through 2001.

The 4.0-liter Cologne V6 engine was introduced in 1990 and was used in a modified form through 2012 when the Ranger was discontinued in North America. They were available with a range of either manual or automatic transmissions. For the 1989 model year, the Mazda M5OD-R1 transmission became the standard transmission.

Ford Ranger trucks feature a front-engine layout with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. For the 1989 model year, rear-wheel anti-lock brakes became standard. Ford vehicles can be identified by the Ford emblem, which depicts the name “Ford” in a cursive font inside of a blue oval.

When did Ford Ranger go fuel injection?

Introducing the Ford Ranger: past models – In 1972, Ford owned a 7% stake in Mazda. Once Ford acquired more stakes, they introduced the Ford Ranger as a replacement for the Courier in 1982. The Ranger was nearly the same size as the Courier and offered 6 and 7 foot beds.

  1. It was available with both a V-6 or 4-cylinder diesel engine.
  2. According to therangerstation.com, it became available with four-wheel drive later in the model year and the base Ranger had the 2-liter inline 4-cylinder engine rated at 72 hp.
  3. The first Ranger was priced at just $6,203.
  4. Adjusted for inflation, that would be $16,570.

The 1984 Ford Ranger’s styling remained unchanged. Shortly after, they introduced the more upscale Ranger S model that was a very stripped down version. After that, the 1985 Ford Ranger was a fuel-injected 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that was more powerful than the carbureted version it replaced.

  • A carbureted 2.8-liter V-6 remained optional, and newly available was a four-speed automatic transmission.
  • The 5-speed manual transmission became standard, replacing the 4-speed manual.
  • Ford continued to stress that the Ranger was a small scale version of the F-150.
  • The 1986 Ranger offered a standard cab and a new Super Cab.

Under the hood, the Ranger lineup had electronic fuel injection. It also offered a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder.

  1. Great truck.
  2. I’ve held on to it, learned how to work on vehicles, bought really nice tools to do the work.
  3. It has consistently given me around 23.5 MPG.
  4. Only burns about 1qt of oil every 6000 miles.
  5. Everything major is still original.
  6. Although it’s sadly losing the battle to rust and corrosion, the interior vinyl and cloth look amazingly good considering it’s always been parked outside in the heat and sun.

At this point I’m expecting it will lose the battle to rust before it mechanically fails. : 1988 Ford Ranger Reviews – Carsurvey.org
