The utility of this “cargo” van is endless. The strength and roadworthiness of the sprinter chassis are everything you want in an RV.
Sprinter vans come with a four-cylinder 2.1 liter and six-cylinder 3.0 turbo diesel engines. They do have some regular gasoline engines available now as well. However, the diesel engines get better gas mileage. The walkthrough cabin and sheer size of the available space inside a sprinter van are other reasons van life enthusiasts can’t turn their heads from the Mercedes-Benz sprinter van.
Sprinter vans are known for being well made, multi-functional, and reliable.

How fast does a Mercedes Sprinter go?
Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van If you need to carry large items often, this vehicle is for you. Vans are far more practical than pickup trucks, but people think a pickup is cool looking and a van is not. Therefore, they buy millions more pickups than vans every year. A vehicle is there to help you do your job better, and nothing does that better than the Sprinter van.
For comparison, a Ford F150 can carry as much as 2,200 pounds, while an F250 can do 4,300 pounds and an F350 does 4,600 pounds. The big difference between a pickup and the Sprinter is in towing capacity. An F150 can tow more than 10,000 pounds and F250 and F350 trucks can double that number.
- The Sprinter’s maximum towing rating is 7,500 pounds.
- More on that later.
- Our Sprinter was equipped with the V6 turbodiesel engine, which was awesome.
- It is only a 3.0-liter V6 and puts out 188 hp and 325 pound-feet of torque.
- It is mated to an excellent seven-speed automatic transmission that is smooth and quick to shift.
The ratios are well chosen and fit the purpose of the Sprinter. The Sprinter is not really much of a “sprinter,” so if you tried to measure 0-60 mph, it will be disappointing. Top speed is limited to 90 mph, which is fine because you don’t want to be going much faster than that anyway.
The beauty of the engine is how effortlessly it gets the job done. The engine really makes you feel comfortable and does its job with no fuss. It is a great cruiser, but the best part is fuel economy. During freeway driving, we easily got 25 mpg, which is unbelievable considering the size of this vehicle.
Our Sprinter had the towing package and was listed at 5,000 pounds maximum. We towed a 5,000 pound trailer and the Sprinter handled it with ease. It felt like we could tow 10,000 pounds and the Sprinter would manage just fine. Towing numbers are dictated by two major factors, engine and chassis.
- Sometimes you have a vehicle with tons of power but the chassis just is not heavy duty enough to manage a big load.
- As an example, a Mercedes AMG G63 SUV has 577 horsepower, plenty of power to tow anything up the steepest hill, but it is only rated for 7,000 pounds of towing.
- Our Sprinter has a solid chassis, but with 188 hp, you would not be able to tow a huge trailer uphill.
Now, we were on fairly flat terrain, which made it easy, but if you had to climb long hills, maybe the story would be different. Regardless, the Sprinter is a great towing machine that gets the job done, and in our short test produced about 18 mpg while towing, which was spectacular.
- Everyone was sold on the Sprinter.
- Everyone loved the Sprinter for how easy it made things.
- The biggest version can carry 533 cubic feet of cargo and when it is not filled with cargo, it can become a comfortable bedroom.
- No wonder there are so many people using Sprinters for camping.
- Once we unloaded our Sprinter at our destination, we spent the night inside in comfort.
You can even get a Sprinter with four-wheel drive, which is great if you need to reach those remote camping sites. The Sprinter is a modern vehicle that has many of the features that are common in higher-end cars today. Standard features include multi-function steering wheel, electric mirrors, cruise control, keyless start, USB-C ports, shift paddles and more. Optional features include things like power seats, power side door, heated seats, multimedia system, navigation and more.
- Mercedes-Benz is serious about safety, and you get all kinds of safety programs, such as active cruise control, blind-spot assist, lane-keeping assist, park assist, traffic sign assist, 360 degree camera, crosswind assist, attention assist, etc.
- Of course, most of these functions are unnecessary if you are a good driver who pays attention.
The 360-degree camera, though, is one feature that we would not go without. It is a big vehicle and it is hard to see everything around you so the 360 camera really helps. The Sprinter is full of features and feels terrific when you are driving it. Compared to old American vans, it feels tight and nimble.
- Even compared to a modern full-size pickup truck, it feels lighter and more maneuverable.
- If you want a Sprinter in your driveway, you would have to pull out $36,355 for a base cargo gasoline version.
- A diesel cargo starts out at $40,735.
- Our version’s base price was $48,110 and we enjoyed a host of options that brought up the price to $60,000.
The options list on our van was long and if we were buying one, we would not select many of those options. For example, our van had option B25 Electric Parking Brake for $276 which was useless. We would be happier with a conventional parking brake. It is simpler, cheaper and much faster acting than the electric version.
- Either way you outfit yours, the beauty of the Sprinter is that it can be configured to your needs, and it is such a well-built machine that it will become your business partner.
- You see so many used diesel models go over 300,000 miles and that speaks volumes about the quality and reliability of the Sprinter van.

Do Sprinter vans run on diesel?
At the core of the Sprinter Van’s power are two turbo-diesel engines —both having a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds without breaking a sweat.

What is the difference between a Mercedes Sprinter 2500 and 3500?
Towing Capacity – In most cases, you should be able to carry everything you need for your trip inside the van. Also, you can install roof racks to store even more equipment up top. However, if you need to tow something, you must know the towing capacity of your rig.
Sprinter 2500 models can tow up to 5,000 pounds, while 3500 models can tow up to 7,500. As with the payload, it’s best to avoid maxing out the limit. There’s always the risk of breaking your trailer jack and sending your load flying. Why it Matters Realistically, you won’t be towing something massive like a travel trailer behind your camper van.
However, a higher towing capacity offers more flexibility to bring outdoor equipment (i.e., ATVs or dirt bikes) and other materials. Again, knowing how you want to use your van will help you make the best decision.

Why are Sprinter vans so popular?
Versatility – Versatility is the number one reason why Sprinter vans are so popular. Smaller than an RV, but with massive advantages over car camping or smaller vans, Sprinter campers are the perfect balance between luxury and convenience. Sprinters are easily maneuverable in city environments.
- Depending on the wheelbase of the van, they can fit in a standard parking space.
- They’re tall enough to stand up inside of, but small enough to take most places a car can go.
- You can fit a bed, kitchen, seating area, and lots of storage in a Sprinter van, but you won’t be limited to where you can take it, as is the case in an RV.
Sprinters also come with optional 4 wheel-drive, so you can use them for ski trips and to access tucked-away camping spots off the beaten path. Despite having plenty of room for many of the comforts of home, Sprinter vans get astonishingly good gas mileage, thanks to Mercedes’ much-acclaimed line of highly efficient diesel engines.

Look—Jerry knows you’re not a bad driver. In fact, our research shows that nearly 50% of U.S. drivers would rate themselves as “great,” and over half of Americans believe they’re the best driver in their immediate family. But, well, stuff happens. And when that stuff hits the fan—whether it’s that speeding ticket you got while you were vibing to Beyonce’s new single or the DUI you picked up after that night of bad decisions in college—insurance companies are likely to raise your rates and even label you a “high-risk driver.” Take a look at the table below to see how Jerry customers with previous infractions adjusted their rates
Driving Violation | Annual Savings with | |
---|---|---|
Clean Record | $3,808 | $1,242 |
Speeding under 15 | $5,820 | $679 |
Failure to Obey Traffic Sign | $2,535 | $520 |
If you get a DUI while driving your Sprinter 2500, you can expect your premium to increase by an average of 19%, We’ve all been there. If you get a speeding ticket in your Sprinter 2500, your insurance premium could increase by an average of 101%, If you’re a young driver, you might feel like you need literal superpowers to find decent car insurance at a fair price.
That’s because most insurance companies label drivers under age 25 as “high-risk drivers”—regardless of their actual driving record! The logic makes sense: because young drivers are less experienced, they tend to have statistically higher accident rates. Companies hike young drivers’ premiums to account for their perceived risk, even if their records are spotless.
If you’re under 25, you could be paying as much as $56 more every month for your insurance. Below is a comparison of average rates Jerry customers saw, broken down by age. Maybe you’ve got a perfect driving record and you’ve got a decent number of years behind the wheel.
But your insurance premiums are still high—why? It’s all about risk. If you live somewhere with high rates of auto theft, traffic accidents, or severe weather, the risk to your vehicle goes up. Where you see your neighborhood, your insurance company sees a higher chance of expensive claims, and they’ll factor that into your premium.
So where can Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 drivers find the lowest rates—and where can you expect higher-than-average premiums? Take a look at the breakdown below. Read about car insurance by state If you own a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500, here’s what you need to know about your vehicle:
The trim level you pick at the dealership affects your insurance rate. Opting for that top-of-the-line TRD trim will cost more upfront, and it’ll add to your monthly expenses. Regular maintenance will keep your in peak shape and help you avoid accidents that could raise your rate. Be sure to follow the recommended maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual! If you bought your Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 new, it’s worth considering new car replacement insurance to protect your investment.
Key Takeaway: The more your Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 is worth, the more you’ll pay to insure and drive it. The average annual cost to insure a model is $2,959, But who says you have to be average? Here are a few hacks to help you save money on insurance.
You’ve heard it before: compare, compare, compare. When it comes to finding car insurance savings, comparison shopping is the name of the game. Here’s why it works: every insurance company uses a different algorithm to set your rate. Unless you have the ability to automatically detect the optimal algorithm for your vehicle, age, zip code, etc., the only way to find the right coverage at the best rate is to compare quotes.
Actually, there is one other way—download the app, and let Jerry handle the algorithms (and the savings!) By answering a few simple questions, you can get instant access to Jerry’s pool of over 55 top insurance companies, and you’ll see rate comparisons in as little as 45 seconds! That’s right, safe driving could literally put money back in your pocket.
Not only will tickets send your rate skyrocketing, but you’ll set yourself up for discounts if you can maintain a totally clean record. If you’re close to that perfect clean record, try out a telematics program like Jerry’s Drive Well, Earn Perks to earn instant savings for your good on-road behavior.
And if you’ve already got a driving history that’s, well, less than stellar, don’t despair: Jerry can still help you find low rates and improve your driving (and it’s all on your phone!). : Compare quotes for Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 car insurance cost, 2022

Which is better Transit or Sprinter?
– Best Features of Mercedes Sprinter Vans
The Sprinter is the only van on this list with a factory 4×4 option, So if you live in a cold climate, plan to overland, or just want the extra assurance of having a four-wheel-drive when needed, then the Sprinter beats the competition. Just like other Mercedes vehicles, the Sprinter van maintains a high resale value, True, you’ll probably pay more upfront. But the demand for Sprinters is high and resale values are typically excellent. The Sprinter has more clearance than the Transit or ProMaster. This is a significant advantage when going off-roading or driving in the snow. The Sprinter beats both the Transit and ProMaster for driver and front-seat comfort, There is significantly more legroom and headroom in the Sprinter. Plus, it has a more ergonomic seat position. Diesel Sprinters allow you to use the popular Espar or Webasto heating systems without an auxiliary diesel tank. That’s because diesel-powered heaters connect directly to the fuel tank. Sprinters have the largest aftermarket for parts, accessories, and upgrades. Shop for all our Sprinter upgrades here. Various interior and exterior color and material upgrades are available, so you can customize your Sprinter van to your desired aesthetic. Sprinters have an above-average MPG for 6-cyl diesel.
Take note
Cost, Sprinters have the highest MSRP price of all van options. In addition, one could argue that they have a higher cost of ownership than other vans due to the cost of maintenance and replacement parts. Compared to Ford, it can be harder to find a Mercedes-Benz service center. With fewer service locations, be sure to check local availability before making a purchasing decision.
