Kia’s new-generation Carnival people-mover could spawn hybrid and electric models within the next two years, according to new reports. 2021 Kia Carnival review: Australian first drive The all-new Kia Carnival people-mover could be set to gain fuel-sipping hybrid and zero-emission electric variants in the coming years, according to new reports out of South Korea. DailyCar claims a briefing given to suppliers of Kia’s Sohari plant in Korea details its plans to end production of the Stinger sports sedan in the second half of 2022 – freeing up space for production of electrified (hybrid and electric) variants of the new Carnival people-mover.
While the report isn’t clear on when the hybrid and electric Carnivals will arrive – stating launch timelines from the first half of 2022, to sometime in 2023 – it’s likely the hybrid will launch first, in the first half of 2022, followed by the electric model in 2023, once the end of Stinger production opens up capacity on the assembly line.
No other details of the hybrid variant are given, though it’s possible it will share its mechanicals with the Sorento Hybrid (which shares the Carnival’s platform) – a model slated for an Australian launch around October 2021. The electrified Sorento pairs a 1.6-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol engine with a 44kW electric motor, 1.5kWh battery and a six-speed automatic to send 169kW to the front or all four wheels. According to Korean testing procedures, front-wheel-drive hybrid Sorento models on large 19-inch wheels sip 7.0 litres of petrol per 100km on the combined cycle, versus 7.5L/100km for an all-wheel-drive diesel variant on 20-inch wheels – a reduction of nearly seven per cent (or more, if comparing to the 3.5-litre V6 offered in Australia, but not in Korea). To stay competitive in today’s electric vehicle (EV) market, the Carnival EV (or whatever name it carries to production) would need to offer around 450 to 500km of driving range, a 10 to 80 per cent charge time of around 30 minutes, and performance matching or exceeding the petrol-powered Carnival’s 200kW V6.
Kia has committed to launching 11 new electric vehicles by 2026, six of which will be SUVs or people-movers – comprising four models on the new E-GMP modular platform, and two on architectures shared with petrol- and diesel-engined vehicles. With the next-generation Niro small SUV – which offers a choice of petrol-electric hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric options – set to occupy one of those two slots, expect the combustion-based Carnival EV to fill the second.
