#02. The BMW S1000RR – 
Remember the HP2 and what we said it gave birth to? Well, this is what we were talking about: the absolutely godlike BMW S1000RR, When it was first launched in 2009 it caught us all by surprise. BMW had given hints that they were going to bring out a superbike but we thought it would be a good few years before they brought out anything that could logically challenge the supremacy of the likes of Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Ducati.
That’s not what happened though. Instead, BMW sauntered onto the scene and brought the fight to the old masters. S1000RR enthusiasts might be a little upset that the bike hasn’t seen that much in the way of an update since 2009, but that’s shouldn’t be a complaint: that’s a testament to how amazing this BMW motorcycle was straight from the word go.
There’s a new one coming though, a completely overhauled version that should once again shoot shockwaves through the segment – and we can’t wait to be there when it happens. But the S1000RR isn’t number one. Oh no

BMW 3 Series and 4 Series: Best Selling BMW Models Worldwide As BMW’s portfolio gets wider and wider, and SUVs become more and more important, it can seem as though BMW’s lost its way and become an SUV maker, rather than the builder of small sports sedans and coupes we’ve come to know.
- However, if you actually look at the data, there are some encouraging signs for proper BMW enthusiasts.
- Last year, BMW sold 490,969/ models, making the pair by far and away the best selling Bimmers of 2021.
- That’s about 76,000 more units sold than the next best-selling BMWs, the X3/X4 siblings, which sold around 414,000 models.
The 490,000 3 Series/4 Series models sold show a 16 percent increase in sales versus the previous year. Following the BMW 3 Series/4 Series and X3/X4 were the 5 Series/6 Series (326,212), the X1/X2 (311,928), and the 1 Series/2 Series (265,964). Interestingly, BMW’s dead-last car in terms of sales was the Z4 (14,778), which had even fewer sales than the BMW iX/i3/i8, despite the latter two going out of production.
The BMW 3 Series and 4 Series are supposed to be BMW’s bread and butter — small-ish, sporty sedans and coupes. BMW is a 2002 company, that’s the car that made the brand what it is today. Which now makes it a 3 Series company, as the 3er is the natural successor to the original 2002. If the 3 Series, and its 4 Series siblings, wasn’t the brand’s best selling mode, something would be wrong.
It’s also rather surprising that the 3 Series/4 Series duo were the best selling BMWs of 2021. SUVs dominate the marketplace at the moment and the BMW X3/X4 would have been my first guest. However, it’s incredibly encouraging to see BMW’s 3 Series taking the lead for the brand and that more customers worldwide appreciated the 3 Series more than the X3 in 2021.
- Especially when cars like the continue to poach customers from BMW.
- Sales should get even better for BMW next year, too.
- The BMW 3 Series is due for its LCI facelift, which will bring about some design, interior, and potentially technology changes that will keep the 3er fresh until this generation rides its life-cycle out.

The Nissan LEAF is the vehicle that depreciates the most, losing 65.1 percent of its value after five years. “Electric vehicles like the first-generation Nissan LEAF become outdated quickly due to the rapid advancements in range and battery life, as early LEAF batteries were only expected to last eight to ten years,” said Brauer.
“Government incentives like the $7,500 federal tax credit also play a role in the LEAF’s steep depreciation, as its resale value is based on original MSRP, but real-world transaction prices when new are effectively $7,500 lower. A second electric vehicle, the BMW i3 earns the second spot. “The BMW i3 had just 80 miles of range before its 2017 update, and it had a high price tag for its city car designation,” said Brauer.
“The limited market for the i3 led to its recent cancellation, and its lack of popularity, high price tag, and government incentives all contribute to steep depreciation. Luxury sedans account for six models on this list, including the third-ranked BMW 7 Series superluxury sedan, the fourth-ranked Maserati Ghibli, the sixth-ranked Jaguar XF, the seventh-ranked BMW 5 Series, the eighth-ranked Audi A6, and the tenth-ranked Volvo S60.
Luxury buyers want to be seen in the latest version of their preferred model, but that status fades quickly after a luxury vehicle drives off the lot, drastically reducing these models’ value on the secondary market,” said Brauer. “Moreover, the popularity of sedans has declined, so the price has to significantly drop to make these vehicles desirable to used car shoppers to compensate for their high operating costs and outdated technology.” Two SUVs from luxury brands round out the list, including the fifth-ranked BMW X5 midsize crossover SUV and the ninth-ranked Lincoln Navigator L full-size SUV.
“The BMW X5 has a higher than average starting price for the class as well as a high cost of ownership and high repair costs, all contributing to the vehicle’s steep depreciation,” said Brauer. “The Lincoln Navigator L is a common fleet and livery vehicle, which depreciate more than privately owned vehicles.”
