After the question and answer session with Ian Foston below, we share some insight from the Ford Australia design team. Q: Exactly how much of the 2022 Ford Ranger is new compared to the example in showrooms today? A: “Pretty much every part of the platform has been touched to some degree. Q: If we had a cutaway of today’s Ford Ranger chassis and a cutaway of the 2022 Ford Ranger chassis, and painted the new parts in yellow, how much would be new? A: “All of it. If you want to colour in a new frame versus an old frame, the whole thing is brand new.
- From an architectural point of view, it’s a box-section frame.
- It’s got a beam axle on the rear, it’s got leaf springs on the rear, we’ve got independent front suspension, and the way in which the engine and transmission attach to it are similar.
- The conceptual architecture is very similar.
- The underbody is very similar.
But it’s the next-generation or the third-generation car. “The T6 chassis (which underpins the Ford Ranger, Ford Everest and Ford Bronco) has evolved significantly over the past several years. The first generation was introduced in 2011 as a one-piece frame.
- Then in 2015 we introduced the second-generation T6 (with) a three-piece frame for Everest and the North American Ranger.
- That opened a whole lot of flexibility for us.
- With this third-generation (T6 frame) we’ve made even more changes – most notably on the hard points of the frame – where we attach the underbody components such as the suspension, axles, driveline and so on.” Q: In addition to the new front section of the chassis, where you’ve lengthened the “dash-to-axle” ratio, even the centre section of the chassis – the main sections of the chassis rails – are new? A: “Everything, the whole thing is brand new.
It has all been re-tooled. Moving the wheels forward, moving the wheels outboard, that’s (required) a lot of changes, including where the engine is positioned. The hydro-formed construction completely changes how you execute the engine bay, where all the components are fitted.
- It’s significantly different in terms of how all of the components are located onto the frame.
- Q: Are the cabin, door frames, and the “glasshouse” the same as today’s Ford Ranger? A: “The cabin is not the same.
- The cabin is entirely new.
- Every part.
- Q: Including the roof? A: “The roof is retooled.
- Q: The door apertures? A: “I’ll explain.
For example, the work we did on the Ford Everest in 2015, we actually changed the position of the doors relative to the body side, the amount of draw you have on the body side, the sealing structure. How the doors sit against it may look very similar, you may look at Ranger and Everest today and say, well, actually they’re the same door, they’re the same body side aperture.
- Architecturally, they’re similar although they’re very different.
- So what we’ve done this time is taken that approach and said, ‘how we can we (improve it) again?’ So we’ve gone to the latest design and the best possible performance, for the best possible sealing, to make sure the cabin is sealed correctly, and to make sure that we have the right door-opening efforts.
“Even though we talk about architecturally, things that are similar, every part of the car pretty much has been retooled.” Q: So the glass from today’s Ford Ranger won’t fit the 2022 Ford Ranger? A: “No, absolutely not. I know that for a fact, because when we released it, it’s got a completely new part number.
The glass runs inside, and some of the (power window) motors that we’re using wouldn’t fit, and also the glass and steel is again slightly different. “You may look at the car and say: ‘Isn’t it the same?’ It certainly isn’t. The glass runs are all different, the aperture, and the way we’ve moulded it with all the sheet metal around the edges, it’s all very different compared to what it was on the previous generation Ranger.” Q: What about the dimensions? A: “We’ve pushed the front wheels further forward and all four wheels further outward, for better stability (but) mirror to mirror, it’s exactly the same width as the current Ford Ranger.
We have kept the proportions of the vehicle, because customers love the size of the truck. People have told us they don’t want us to make the Ranger much bigger (because of) where customers need to park, the tracks they drive down, that kind of thing.
The exterior of the truck, it’s kind of the right size (but we have) maximised interior space. “The new Ford Ranger is slightly higher by a few millimetres because of the tyres we’re now using. We’ve got a little bit more ground clearance, but if you look at the two vehicles side by side, as a customer you would be hard-pressed to understand that dimensionally it does look different.” Design Ford revealed the early engineering and design work for the 2022 Ford Ranger commenced in 2016, and the dimensions – or “hard points” – of the final design and structure were finalised in 2018, before validation commenced on 200 physical prototypes over the next three years.
The design of the 2022 Ford Ranger was overseen by former Holden designer Max Wolff – who left General Motors in 2010 after heading Cadillac exterior design, and worked for Ford in the US from 2010 to 2016. Mr Wolff returned to Australia on New Year’s Day in January 2016 to help lead the Ford Ranger design team.
While there are more than 200 designers at Ford’s styling studio in Melbourne, another Max (Max Tran) was primarily responsible for the new Ranger. By coincidence, both Max Wolff and Max Tran studied industrial design at Monash University (Caufield campus) before starting their careers in the car industry.
Max Tran had scored an internship with Ford Australia and was hired in 2006 – as soon as he completed his studies – and has been working for Ford ever since. The Ford Australia design team had the weight of the world on its shoulders with the new model.
The Ford Ranger is sold in 180 countries – more than have McDonald’s stores – and it is sold in more countries than any other Ford motor vehicle. “For the design, we had to have a global outlook as we knew our truck had work in a lot of markets,” said Mr Tran. “But we found actually there were very similar customer tastes and customer needs (across different regions).
“We also took design influence from our Ford global portfolio,” said Mr Tran. “When you start on an exterior design, it’s about how the look makes people feel.” Ford says its designers and engineers conducted 5000 customer interviews and wrote 1800 pages of notes during the research phase and early development of the 2022 Ford Ranger. Is the Ford Ranger affected by the chip shortage?
Ford has had to delete a feature from its outgoing Ranger due to the semiconductor shortage, but for some buyers this might not be bad news. Automatic stop/start, often a polarising feature among new car buyers, has been struck off the feature list for most Ranger models. The Everest, which uses the same engine, is unaffected. The removal of auto stop/start follows the recent removal of a 230V power outlet for an entirely different reason. Available until the so-called ‘MY21.75′ Ranger, Everest and Transit sold since June 2021, Ford says its ‘universal socket’ fell afoul of local regulations. “We reiterate that our power inverter system has been designed to Ford’s own global engineering standards, and customers who already have a Ranger, Everest or Transit fitted with these sockets can continue to use them.” The same regulations have also forced Ford to introduce its next-generation Ranger sans the 400W inverter and plug in the tub that’ll be available in other markets.
The company says it’s working with the regulator to resolve this issue. Ford has also removed the tailgate lock barrel on Ranger Wildtrak and Raptor models, however these models still feature a tailgate that can be unlocked using the key fob. CD players have also been binned across both the Ranger and Everest lines.
