What happens if a BMW Battery isn’t registered?

In general, it is relatively uncomplicated to learn how to do this and it is often described in detail in the vehicle’s operating manual. Here are our recommendations after a few test cases. In practice, this is how it work´s: Electric windows: Ignition ON (i.e. the electronic instrument cluster lights up on the display), but the engine remains OFF. Lower the window completely on the driver’s side, then close the window completely again and keep the button pressed for approx.2 seconds after closing. This initialisation should also take place if the fuse has been changed or the plug on the window switch has been removed (e.g. when removing the door panel without disconnecting the battery). Often the operating instructions do not mention that this should be repeated for the other windows. However, it is nevertheless recommended to repeat this procedure for all other windows. Steering angle sensor: Bonnet must be closed, ignition ON, engine ON, turn steering wheel to left until stop, turn steering wheel to right until stop, turn steering wheel back to middle position, engine OFF. This is how the system configures the steering angle sensor. Tyre pressure monitoring: Ignition ON, keep “SET” button pressed for tire pressure monitoring until the tyre pressure warning light flashes 1-2 times and you hear a sound. Tyre pressure monitor has now started to be configured by the system. The configuration process is complete when the vehicle has been driven for around 20 minutes. Sunroof: Ignition ON, press “Raise sunroof” button until the sunroof is completely opened and then press button for „lowering / closing the sunroof” approx.2-3 seconds later. Start-stop system: Press and hold the start-stop button until you hear a sound, then press and hold the engine start and start-stop buttons. An acoustic signal is heard again and a few seconds later the start-stop button lights up green. This is how the start-stop system is configured. Please note: If the battery is low, the start-stop button may light up red again after a short period of time, and the battery must then be recharged. (See battery tip: Charging in the vehicle ) If the battery is quite old and if the charging attempts are still unsuccessful as the start-stop button remains red or flashes, then the only option left is to replace the battery. Optional: If you retrofit a rear view camera yourself and this causes problems, initialise it via the menu of the audio head unit, exactly as described in the camera operating instructions. In the test case, the following had to be done: Press the “VOL PUSH POWER” and “SEEK>>|” button on the device at the same time, enter code “92” in the diagnostics menu and confirm with the “ENTER” button. Back with “VOL PUSH POWER”. PS: For car models with the original camera this procedure is not necessary. Often, the audio or navigation system also does not need to be configured. Similarly, disconnecting the battery usually has no effect on the “Keyless Go & Entry” system. From a UK perspective. my original battery was over 10-years old, but have had it replaced ahead of winter. I looked at getting an aftermarket AGM and was investigating how to register it myself. (I don’t code or have any software). Got a price from my dealer for an OEM battery, have them fit and register, taking responsibility for me driving away all sorted. I was surprised at the price. I paid £231,30 (sterling), including tax. Wasn’t worth the hassle of getting a battery, fitting myself, battery disposal and sorting out how I’d register it.

The installed and registered price of a battery at a dealership averages $500. The dealer charge for registration can be as much as $150, depending on how straight the road is to their location, and therefore from how far off they can see you coming. When I exercised due diligence after becoming a BMW owner and saw that, and found out that for that same $150 I could buy a Foxwell NT510 that would register a new battery and a whole lot more, I bought one. I haven’t used it to register a battery yet, but it’s still saved me at least $500 by eliminating the need to go to a dealer for other diagnostic and repair issues. The average cost for a battery at auto supply stores in the US is $200. Many of those stores will register the battery at no charge. Worst case you might need to get Bimmerlink, but $40 is a lot less than $150, not to mention being able to do your own diagnostics that stealerships also charge $150 a pop for.

Around here the auto parts stores will also dispose of the battery too when you buy one from them. Some places I’ve lived will do it for free, where I live now I think there is a mandatory fee, but it’s only around $20. You still come out WAY ahead of a dealership. You don’t even have to give them the old battery on the spot. I’ve bought a battery before, taken it home, swapped it with the old one, and then taken the old one back a day or two later. As long as you show them the receipt, they will take it off your hands. I’m about due for a battery in my F32. First time I’ve had to do the registration dance in a car. The Foxwell is a good tip.
